MMA/Self-Defense & Core/Cardio
Prerequisite: Student must play on a basketball team
In this class students will receive high level development in the game of basketball. Students are required to be a member of a
basketball team (Upward, recreational, etc).
Skill development is the foundation of excellent play on the court. Shooting Starz skills development covers every aspect of basketball fundamentals: advanced footwork, passing, ball-handling, defense and shooting. Sessions will focus on identifying weaknesses and developing strategies and drills. Each workout will focus on punishing weaknesses while strengthening existing abilities in order to meet individual goals. Sessions are intense and the athlete is pushed hard to accomplish their goal of improving their skill level.
The key to skills mastery is repetition. Repetitive practice of fundamental skills in the correct manner teaches the body how to perform a skill correctly. This "muscle memory" is retained in the athlete's subconscious so that performing an athletic skill correctly requires no conscious effort. Basketball is a game of moments and if your body has not been trained to react to these moments, you will not take advantage of opportunities. We train the body to react to these basketball moments!

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) /Self-Defense (1 semester) and Core/Cardio (1 semester)
In MMA/ Self-Defense students will get high intensity exercise while learning a variety of moves from this popular sport. These workouts will include kicks,
punches, sprawls in many different combinations and will advance throughout the course. These moves will also play as basic "self-defense" moves involving blocking, retreat and counters. On a scale of 1-10, the intensity of this class will be about 8.0. There WILL BE modifications to the exercises, but this is probably not a good class for a beginner. This class will be offered as a semester class.
In Core/Cardio students will get moderate level exercise that will focus on abdominal strength and cardiovascular endurance. These workouts will include a variety of core exercises combined with cardio exercises. On a scale of 1-10, the intensity of this call will around a 7.0. There WILL BE modifications to exercises and will be ok for intermediate level students. This class will be offered as a semester class.

Sports Fusion is a physical education class based on the premise of getting active and maintaining a healthy physical lifestyle. Even if you are not an “athletic” person, there still has to be some form of physical activity to keep the cardiovascular, muscular and mental
components healthy. Sports Fusion is that activity! Sports Fusion will be offered to all students (and PARENTS) of MAS and the idea is to keep
relative grades and ages together. Parents are welcome to join the class their child is in, or if there is enough interest, I can offer a parents only class. Minimum class size will be 5 and maximum will be about 20.
There will be two components to Sports Fusion. The first component will be a straight forward physical activity class. In this class the focus will be on flexibility, strength and cardiovascular endurance. Classes will offer a variety of workouts ranging from calisthenics and stretching to balance and even some yoga movements! The second component will be more geared towards the high school students that want to also cover a Health Elective in the classroom. I will offer a “classroom” portion that will focus on proper nutrition, some general exercises & activities and healthy lifestyle. You WILL be able to take the physical component without taking the classroom portion, but YOU WILL NOT be able to only take the classroom portion. The classroom portion WILL AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDE the physical component.
