AP Statistics is a course that parallels a college-level introductory statistics class. The study of statistics has a broad range of

applications including business, finance, education, law, medicine, social sciences, sports, and STEM fields, making it attractive

to students considering many different career paths. The versatile nature of this course allows students to direct their

learning to topics of individual interest, as well as a variety of project-based assessments. Students will be prepared for both

the multiple choice and the free response portions of the optional AP exam (given in May). Development of mathematical

literacy, as well as oral and written expression of mathematical concepts, will be emphasized. Major topics to be covered in

class and on the AP Statistics Exam are:

Exploring data using graphical and numerical techniques to study patterns and departures from patterns.

Exploring sampling and experimentation by planning and conducting a study.

Anticipating patterns through the exploration of random phenomena using probability and simulation.

Using statistical inference in estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses.

**Texts:**

Stats: Modeling the World by Bock, Velleman, and DeVeaux – This book will be provided on loan by the instructor.

Barron’s AP Statistics, 8th Edition by Sternstein – This book may be purchased in the second semester.

Summer reading may also be added.

Technology Requirements: Students will need to supply a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator. Please limit your calculator choice

to one of these two models. Texas Instruments is the leader in educational graphing calculators, and time constraints dictate

that the instructor and students have access to the same calculator. Students will also need access to a computer and printer at

home to run statistical software and print articles and additional materials from the internet. Microsoft Excel or other

spreadsheet software is strongly recommended but not required.

**Tuition:**$85 per month for 9 months; AP test fee (optional but encouraged); textbook and technology costs as listed above. (6

student minimum)

The middle school math course is intended for the middle school student who needs one more year of math before delving into

the more formal study of algebra that is typically provided in pre-algebra. Both 6th and 7th grade students are great candidates

for this course. Each week the instructor will spend time pre-teaching material for the week, reviewing homework

assignments, and troubleshooting areas of difficulty. Mathematical literacy and application of word problems will also be

emphasized. Because middle school is the prime stage of development in which students move from concrete thought to more

abstract thought, hands-on labs will be done frequently in class to facilitate this process. Students will be assigned homework,

classwork, and tests, and they will be given grades for these assignments. This course is intended to offload teaching

responsibilities from the parent at home.

Texts: Teaching Textbooks: Math 7 will be used for this course. The instructor will give weekly assignments to be done at

home. Computer lessons on CD provide plenty of support for the students. Parents may choose to purchase either the

complete software set or just the spiral textbook. The complete curriculum is recommended so that the student has access to

the full lessons and automated grading. If only the spiral textbook is purchased, the parent will need to provide daily teaching

support and grading, as we will not have time in class to cover every topic fully. Visit www.teachingtextbooks.com for more

information on the curriculum and for an optional placement test.

Technology Requirements: Students will need access to a computer with internet access and a printer at home.

**Tuition:**$60 per month for 9 months; textbook and technology costs as listed above. (10 student minimum)

Do you anticipate a need for help with math homework?

Math Lab will be an hour of small group tutoring on Wednesdays. Bring specific questions from your homework or broader topics that are still confusing, even after the brilliant lectures and enlightening videos! The class will be kept small so that every student will be able to ask questions, but if space is available, drop-ins will be welcome.

The Lab is not limited to students enrolled in math classes at Metro Academic Studies, however preference will be given if the spaces fill up.

**Tuition**: $40/month for one hour each week. Drop-in, if available, $10 per hour.
