In this course, the student will continue to build upon the basics of ASL 1 and 2.  The focus will be to continue to build on visual acuity, physical dexterity in accurately producing clear signs and demonstrating the signing is understood.  ASL 3 will expand upon ASL1, ASL2 grammar, facial expressions, body language, classifiers and vocabulary.  The student will learn how to translate sentences from voice into sign and sign to voice, create and sign simple short stories and sign songs in ASL. The student will be required to attend three (3) DEAF events for interaction with the DEAF community and write a minimum two (2) page paper on their experience and insights gained from the event.  These events are held throughout the Atlanta and/or neighboring areas.  Attending these events will reinforce the student's appreciation for Deaf culture.

ASL 3 is a 90 minutes per week course.  Students must have successfully completed ASL1 and SL2 or through testing demonstrate equivalency to enroll!  This course is designed to continue to challenge the student.  Personalized attention will continue to be provided as well as group-team assignments.  The student will be encouraged to use ASL in the classroom and practice with others outside the classroom. This will help to improve both receptive and expressive skills.

Voice in the classroom will be minimal.  The student is immersed in the language to emphasize the best ways to become comfortable and to press the use of the language.  It also helps with retention of what has been learned and improves both receptive and expressive skills.

For this course, we will continue to use ‘A Basic Course in American Sign Language' (second edition), by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden and Terrence J. O’Rourke-- second half of the textbook.  The class will use supplemental materials (Handouts provided by the instructor).

We will continue to use a lot of repetition, so… “Relax and Continue to Have Fun!“
